It’s not elegant, but it’s cheap and damn effective.
So why did I do this? Well I have always wanted something like this, but was too lazy to do something about it. Then there were a myriad of articles this last week about the health problems associated with sitting. And since I’ve started wearing my BodyMedia FIT band, I could see the hours per day where my metabolism crashed within a minute of me sitting down.
So I decided it was time for me to actually do something. And I have found that I am getting more “done” especially when it comes to multitasking. I still use my chair on occasion, but I think leaving the desk in the “standing” configuration works better overall.
More on this when I get to “Month One” on this whole thing.

It’s hard to tell from the picture but how tall is the desk can you actually stand in front of it type, and be affective?
The table I built on top of my desk is 39″ off the ground (10.5″ off the top of my desktop). When standing, the keyboards are positioned slightly above the height of my belly button.
I took a few days of playing around with “what would work”, trying different heights before I found one that was comfortable both standing up and seated. When I do sit (and yes, you do need to every now and then) I tried to find a height that was useful with the chair I had. I would like to upgrade to a bar stool type of chair, but I find that I prefer to stand when doing quick tasks. And since I’m using two machines I find that moving between the two is more “deliberate” which means I can focus on “that screen” much easier.
Brian, I don’t think I would recognize you if you were walking down the street!! Congratulations on losing so much weight! You look fantastic!
I need to apologize for losing contact with you. It’s been rough since your grandmother Wohlgemuth passed. And then your grandfathers passing was hard. Basically it’s been all I can do to just take care of stuff around here and go to work. So I’m sorry about that. I couldn’t remember your email so I googled you and found this. : ^)
Well, I just wanted you to know that I love you and think of you often….
